Silverfish feed on starches and dextrin in adhesives which can be found in books (paper), photographs, plaster, clothing, carpets and other household items and materials. Fabrics they will consume include cottons, leather, linen and silk which means your curtains, clothing, furniture and rugs are at risk of damage from these highly destructive creatures.
They are about 13-25mm in length and their abdomens taper from wide at the head to narrow at the tail giving them a fish-like appearance- especially when they wriggle. They are also known as fish moths or carpet sharks. They typically live 2-8 years.
